what happens when a house-music icon takes a small, talented bunch of musicians and mixes it with a savory blend of jazz, funk, dance, and soul music? you get a hearty serving of e.o.l. soulfrito, who make their single debut with upright love on vega records. e.o.l. soulfrito, led by musical director and conductor louie vega, is the condensed version of vega’s elements of life live-band project, which over its tenure has released three albums, won a grammy award in 2006 for best remixed recording, non-classical (curtis mayfield, superfly (louie vega eol mix), and performed for a globally-televised audience during the 2007 superbowl pre-game show. e.o.l. soulfrito’s name is a play on the popular latin-caribbean seasoning sofrito, which serves as a nod to vega’s own puerto rican heritage. earlier this year, the band played their first show at gramps in wynwood, miami during miami music week. upright love embodies the organic energy of e.o.l. soulfrito’s live performances. with a runtime of more than ten and a half minutes, it’s a steady groover that slowly blossoms into a blissful symphony of sprightly chords, jazzy bass, crisp percussion, pattering tambourine courtesy of kat ayala, and cindy mizelle’s vocal ad-lib serenades. easygoing yet refined, the single plays out like a summer afternoon jam session between vega and his friends: axel tosca on fender rhodes & synth upright bass, josh milan on synth jazz guitar & synth percussion. start swaying those hips and let the rhythm carry you into the sunset. i wanted to create a more condensed band, since the elements of life band has ten members, it’s always been a little difficult to do smaller venues. i also wanted to create music inspired by groups and artists like war, cymande, johnny hammond, and herbie hancock’s headhunters, but with the vega e.o.l. twist and style. i then created e.o.l. soulfrito with my studio musicians and rhythm section of elements of life and nuyorican soul. i want to take this band and perform in festivals and venues like the blue note, jazz café, ronnie scots, and bb kings. e.o.l. soulfrito will bring you future grooves with a tinge of the musical landscape from our rich past, and yes, there will be experimentation get ready for it.

new yorks matuss returns with the eighth release on her absence seizure imprint this september, comprising three originals from the ukrainian born artist. julia matuss, better known as simply matuss has been steadily carving out a name for herself over the past decade, initially finding her feet as a prominent dj in the ukrainian scene she grew up in before a move to new york saw thing progress and the launch of her absence seizure imprint shortly followed. now eight releases deep the imprint has piqued the interested of dj s such as d julz, dj deep, derek plaslaiko, twr72 and beaner. taking the lead on the package is fairy dust setting the scene via warbling rhodes chords, raw dub sweeps and a pulsating low-end drive before a spaced out, sinuous resonant synth lead ebbs and flows throughout the focal point of the composition. baelfire follows and strips things back to raw percussive feel, employing thunderous claps, a weighty kicks and sweeping filtered sample as the foundation before the latter half of the record works in a frenzied acid-tinged hook. faramant then closes the package with an amalgamation of organic percussion, natural bass licks and glitchy percussive chimes which all subtly evolve and retract throughout.

it s been quite a while since naibu’s last feature on scientific. more than a year has passed since the release of his acclaimed “case study”, a mature and eclectic quasi d’n’b album rich in live instrumentation and tons of intricate details.
and here’s a follow-up to this work a four track remix ep featuring reworks by some of the biggest names in the atmospheric deep drum & bass current of today. naibu’s already captivating take on music gets reinterpreted in four different ways, so just know that you’ll be treated with a sense of freshness and familiarity at the same time.
spanning a variety of shades of drum & bass, from hiddenwave’s deep and rolling take on “turn me down”, through seba’s nostalgic rework of “astray” and bungle’s powerful, cosmic rearrangement of “case study”, to future engineers heavyweight, solid-basslined reinvention of “fighting for attention”, the ep acts as an excellent supplement to naibu’s original work, offering listeners even more of auditory pleasure.

moscow based multi-talent impish has been steadily honing his skills working through labels such as program, c.i.a. and his own fast rising occulti music imprint. it’s that last label that saw him release the critically acclaimed “silence” lp back in 2016. fast forward to the autumn of 2017 and a new album project the “hush” lp is set for release through all quality physical electronic music outlets around the world. being the perfectionist that he is, impish continues to impress working on crystal clear music productions where impeccable drum work is combined with organic touches and progressions.

after 2 first eps in 2016 on voxnox & arts digital, the young berliner talent opål comes back on the new swiss imprint bipolar disorder. the silem ep demonstrates opål’s ease to encompass both energetic, raving, or deeper techno style.
the main title “silem” takes the listener right away through a melodic journey aiming to warm dancefloors, followed by the dubbier, more classic/chilled “capillaries”. “cadmium” gives acceleration again on the b side with its stomping bass, before to close with “solar”. never forcing the audience, opål cares for details and atmospheres. his ability to experiment and blend genres insures him a unique signature in a driven, puristic, dub, leaning toward hypnotic style.

romanian artist dragutesku’s “convalescent” steadily builds from clicks and crackles to full speed rumble, squelchy bass paired with spacey pads and crisp percussion. cali native rithma responds with “watsonville”, thrusting the ripped-cone kick to the front before the softer side slides beneath the rhythm for an all-night drive. russian producer saktu starts the flipside with “veidi”, a neon-soaked breakbeat floater pulling the low end out for the midsection’s chirrupy synth-chat before turning on the jets. from berlin via budapest comes giash’s “new things”, a frictionless ride on a hypersonic rail across a bubbling, tonal landscape.

emmanuel’s “rave culture” is a record that pushes the boundaries of techno to another level. “rave culture” is his first full-length on the label bringing 2x12” round of wax. ten cuts that are committed to fill a space in the rave scene that no one else has done in terms of power, experimentation, work of soul and most of all showing respect for the old-school way of doing things. this lp is his largest achievement yet and aims to showcase who he is.
emmanuel directs the listener to unknown territory keeping them very concentrated on a rave scenario, but also giving them different reasons to think, act & explode - all with the right balance. deadly floor massacre weapons and well crafted heavy bass works elevate to a modern way of thinking as well as challenging the dancer to think forward and get inspired.

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established, when rooted records was king, the cosy, liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years, naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city, from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world, in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years, idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes, shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately, the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side, the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album, originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands, lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass, with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation, but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side, atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us, it was apparently huge at disc shop zero, so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart, these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch, but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks, naoki.

there s no compromise, with anesthesia the third release on nurse and latest from japanese maestro tomohiko sagae where he aims to numb your pain, bringing together his own mutant brand of techno and the harsh noise so many of his fellow countrymen are revered for. procaine #1 is pure noise with screams of metal grinding against metal and the relentless chaos of a 21st century working dockyard. procaine #2 where an explosive barrage of abrasive textures is underpinned by a brutal rhythmic intensity. tetracaine almost blows itself to pieces with rumbling bass, scoured heavy mechanics and industrial drones. finally lidocaine distorted and break beaten, is a monster born out of heavy duty avionics. disorientating, fierce, an assault on your senses.

with his newest ep goa tee, moscoman finds himself seven releases deep into his 12 part treisar series. living up to its name, the seventh piece of the puzzle is the trippiest of the series yet, kicking off with some of my fears, a piece if outer space hypnosis carried by a rolling percussion and bass combo that will keep firmly stomping across dancefloors. reflecting the mood set on the a side, moments in space sees moscoman channel his italo flair while reaching out for a rave indebted sonic palette. final track chinchilla closes on delirious sounds and 8 bit melodies rubbing shoulders with a lovingly syncopated beat. a weapon all exotically inclined djs will be reaching out for a their next jungle party.

this dirty and groovy slice of house music begins as a vintage quarion production with its funky beat, bubbling sub bass and strings. after a quick build-up, the track introduces a filtered chord sequence that grabs your attention straight away. the chords slowly unfold with subtle new harmonies until the break brings forth an exciting new bassline

the second release in endless illusion s series of split eps comes from marcos cabral & daniel araya and features two tracks from each artist. new york s cabral is known for his experimental idm and techno on labels like l.i.e.s. while daniel araya has recently released an album of acid, techno and industrial on the classicworks label. araya s we almost lost detroit is first and is a truly haunted deep techno cut with sparse acid undulations and a real sense of manic in the rasping synth lines. softer pads in the background only add to the spooky nature of the track. ghost bass is the other araya cut and this one is more up on its toes, with mid tempo kicks down low and wonky chords up top. it s a mind melting tune that trips deep into the night. live at the egg is cabral s first effort and is a lonely and icy techno track that is supple and seductive in its long lines and paddy drums. after getting you into a state of hypnosis, some freaky vocal sounds only add to the unsettling nature of it all later on. cuts & bruises rounds things out in squelchy and depraved techno territory. muted acid stabs are off in the distance as swampy drums suck you in from the front. it s a brilliantly odd tune that close out a fine ep.

this september will see visionquest return with alexi delano’s ‘water colors’ ep, accompanied by a remix from the persuader aka jesper dahlba&#776,,ck. chilean born, swedish raised, new york adopted and amsterdam based producer and dj alexi delano has an impressive back catalogue dating back over two decades and featuring releases on labels such as laurent garnier’s f communications, richie hawtin & john acquaviva’s plus 8, ghostly international’s spectral sound and m_nus as well as visionquest where he returns to here following his collaborative ‘the breeze’ ep alongside label co-founder shaun reeves in 2013. title-track ‘water colors’ opens the release, a smooth and gradually unfolding composition fuelled by an amalgamation deftly programmed multi-layered melodies which ebb and flow throughout the sturdy rhythmic foundation. following is the persuader’s take on ‘water colors’ which dubs things out to create a murky submerged feel in contrast, utilizing the original’s hypnotic melodies whilst subtly working in a rugged 303 line throughout. ‘communicate’ then rounds out the package with a groove-led feel, bringing a squelching acid bass, hooky vocal chop and modulating synth flutters into the limelight as the shuffled dynamic drum machine workout carries things along

dream diary is a label operating out of brixton that has previously featured the likes of afriqua, tom gillieron and richie littler on its roster, and now it s the turn of the head honcho oslo roma to serve up some more of that subversive four-to-the-floor business. mars water- is an infectious minimal roller with bass that wraps itself around your cerebellum and pulls you in deeper, while -bubbles- does the same but without any drums to buffet it along. how good is the party is a more experimental affair that deals with off kilter rhythmic fragments and spaced out textures, leaving ep closer twotet to drop a more immediate slice of electro on the situation.

lossless music’s leftfield sublabel exkursions is back with its second vinyl release. exkur002 features the incredible talent of james morton aka concealed identity. after hearing james’ 12” on narratives soul intent tracked james and proposed james remix “no answers” which is did in amazing style. james also offered up a stunning brand new solo track called “zahir”, a 7 minute journey into cinematic 170bpm. soul intent finishes up the 12” with a 140bpm garage/bass music monster called “tribes” via odyssia alias.

returning to the ring with waterhouse dub, a brand new slab of megaton dub, king jammy, the undisputed heavyweight champion of drum and bass draws for a crucial selection of his roughest and toughest rub-a-dub specials (please officer, boom shack a lack, jail house etc.) to deliver 15 mind-destroying dub knock-outs on ten selected tracks on lp-vinyl-edition including poster.

coalmine records is pleased to relaunch ‘land of the crooks,’ the collaborative extended play project from the late sean price and melbourne’s go to producer, m-phazes. the project finds the longtime underground legend lending his distinctive, brownsville-bred grimy vocals over phazes’ rich tracks full of dramatic pianos, rich bass-lines, swinging horns and hard drums. the a-side includes the main passes, comprised of four original tracks with the addition of the small professor remix for ”murdah type thinkin (feat. guilty simpson).” for this special edition rerelease, coalmine has also added the divided souls ent. & dj pain 1 remix of “land of the crooks,” which was only previously made available on the label’s remix compilation, ‘remineded,’ which first dropped back in january of 2015. the b-side includes the instrumental passes of all of the original tracks, as well as the small pro remix, in addition to the “crookapella,” which includes various scratch stems taken from the ep, in addition to various isolated drum sounds, sound effects, and acapella of the “land of the crooks” single. additional features on lotc include roc marciano, billy danze (of m.o.p.), maffew ragazino, loudmouf choir and the dilated junky, dj babu. vinyl is manufactured on classic black discs, and comes complete with the andres guzman designed artwork, inspired by the vintage ‘80s movie, ‘crocodile dundee.’ sean price was hip-hop’s gray hulk, a barbarian with the pen, with the sharpest of wits. a true brooklyn legend...rip!

after a killer 12 inches from mori ra, jongno edits is back with two tunes, blurring the lines between editing and sampling. the a-side, 42 below, is an uplifting korean fusion boogie with slap bass, tropical synths, summery guitar and female vocals. given a serious dub work out by monsieur jongno. effortlessly working the bassline and guitar with added muscle, subtle dub fx s, drum fills, teasing the vocal and synths before unleashing the chorus and guitar solos. nice brazilian vibes on this one, like a lincoln olivetti production, seoul went rio. on the flip side, drums and a bass is an obscure lp cut from a korean percussion ensemble with traditional korean folk elements, tribal drums and chanting, spikey avant garde guitar plucks, rolling punk funk bassline that builds the energy levels with jazz style vocals and horns. sounding very liquid liquid, a bit can, a bit pig bag, with some korean craziness. expertly extended and re-arranged by the jongno edits main man to give it more of a dancefloor edge, and ramping up the psychedelics. powerful stuff.

shdw002 arrives with a pumping kick and a gorgeous guitar loop. as the filter opens, the landscape widens – laidback percussion, then soothing strings, before a powerful hit of bass and vocals, and we’re off. two tail’s ‘willie has a hunch’, grooves along blissfully, before a spoken word sample comes to twist the meaning and flip the mood. ‘you’ve got me’, is an appropriate title for a harry parsons track where a percussive groove, staccato horns, and those handclaps grip the listener and never relinquish control the result being a thoroughly enjoyable 6 minutes of communal dancefloor goodness.
tribal percussion ushers in side b, as alex wooley begins to build ‘walkin’ away’ around a yearning and disheartened vocal sample. despite the free-flowing instrumentation, the vocals maintain a subtle air of melancholy, which anchor this track in raw, remorseful emotion. mr lover lover concludes proceedings with a confident swagger. ‘i would (like to get to know)’ flips brandy’s ‘i wanna be down’ into an enticing dancefloor shaker - the perfect closer.

all pieces are conceived and recorded between the end of 2015 and 2016 between amsterdam and tuscany. the path starts with cristallo di bismuto which is a low-tempo jam marked by dusty 80s drums and deep pads that transport you straight away in an underground nocturnal urban sci-fi scenario. i wish you could shelter me has within a powerful rolling bass part and a solid drum-machine pattern, dx7 s style keys with some romantic melancholic colors. oosterpark laguna is an exotic house groove with a lush pad and a sweet saxophone solo perfect for a sunny warm day. mare aperto is a nostalgic house tune inspired by the early chicago s piano house and the italian golden era of clubbing of the end of 80s early 90s. the release includes a label s sticker inside and a stamp on the inner sleeve.

auf *hardcourage* führt faltydl konsequent weiter, was auf den singles bereits angekündigt wurde: atmosphärische reisen zwischen house und elektronic. besonders beeindruckend führt dies der hit *she sleeps* vor, ein feature mit ed macfarlane von den friendly fires. doch neben euphorischer elektronik (bells), widmet sich lustmann auch tiefgehendem bass (finally some shit / the rain stopped) und verspielten elementen, wie beispielsweise mit der aktuellen single *straight & arrow* inklusive fantastischem four tet mix. am ende des albums merkt man vor allem eines deutlich: dj-sets im berghain, remixe für the xx, scuba und viele weitere, sowie supportslots für radiohead und damit auch thom yorkes liebe haben faltydl auf seinem dritten album reifen lassen. *hardcourage* ist ein exzellentes werk zwischen tiefgang und tanzfläche geworden, welches jederzeit spannung und intensität offenbart.

rude operator’s dissonant intro on witchdoctor synthesizes a half-time beat with jazz undertones before bouncing into a percussive bassline. constantly evolving drum patterns, punctuated with horn bursts and upright bass from ornette hawkins, keep the dance floor moving.
gunman’s blissed-out atmospherics pave the way for a heavy combination of chopped up breakbeats and a juked-out drumline. equally influenced by early jungle and contemporary footwork, 808 percussion and congas punctuate the undulating bassline.
arrowhead fuses dubbed out elements with a running apache break and ominous synths. percussive vocal stabs propel the song forward, while a deep, driving bassline and amen cuts bring the pressure.
war diamond pays homage to dc’s indigenous sound, go-go. a hypnotic conga drum workout rinses oscillating bass with nature sounds, taking you above the canopy with a relentless swing. lightly toasted by born i music, this fresh take on jungle delivers a heavy, tribal perspective.

things gettin’ faster and more toolish on the second osmund audio release. alexander brandl’s second ep is made for the dancefloor. his drawing board is the modular synth, that spat out three massive groovers with chords from outer space, super thick bass lines and a raw and reduced sound design with roughly edited drums.

for the third and final part of jerome.c, dubfluss - friendship connection we invited julian alexander and guy from downstairs to join our artist roster. a lot of hard work was made into this 3 part lp by our good friends and we hope everyone enjoys it as much as they did producing it. lots of melodic grooves and solid bass lines, proper house music dance tracks on this release. cheers from berlin!

following on from mr.cs stand up single & full length incidents album comes the second single from his album entitled ripple effect, which comes with 3 stunning remixes. the single kicks off with marc houle s remix & in typical marc houle fashion is a wonderful slice of electronic techno in which a funky bass-line, tight rubber beats & atmospheric effects work around the original 303 acid line. next noel jackson ups the tempo, reworks the bass-line, the pads & effects of the original into a real detroit workout that s an immediate dancefloor winner. lastly on the flip side chloe again uses the original parts to perfect affect to take her mix deeper. the bass-line has the most infectious bounce, which makes this remix perfect for either late night heads down darkness or peak time action. this single once again demonstrates why both mr.c & superfreq are creating tsunamis in the clubs right now
